Stan Kelly, O.A.M., lived in Ararat, Victoria, all his life. He worked as an engine-driver for the Victorian Railways for 41 years, retiring in the 1970s. His favourite pastimes include painting in water-colours, particularly Australian native plants, and prospecting for gold. John Morrison was born in England. He came to Australia in 1923 and worked as a gardener and a wharfie. He largely published short stories, often in trade union magazines.
